Species Overview

The largest North American ground squirrel, found in Arctic and subarctic tundra and alpine meadows of Alaska, northern Canada, and eastern Siberia. Adults weigh 0.5–1.5 kg, with significant seasonal fluctuation. Fur is tawny-brown with white dorsal flecking. They are colonial, diurnal, and live in burrow systems in well-drained soil. Omnivorous: seeds, berries, roots, mushrooms, insects, and even carrion. Their most remarkable trait is extreme hibernation—lasting 7–8 months, during which body temperature drops to as low as ?2.9°C, the lowest recorded for any mammal. They arouse periodically (every 2–3 weeks) to shiver and rewarm. Their ability to survive supercooling and ischemia-reperfusion makes them a premier model for cryobiology, organ preservation, and neuroprotection research. They are an important prey item for golden eagles, grizzly bears, and Arctic foxes. Females produce one litter of 5–10 pups per year after ~25 days of gestation. Lifespan: 8–10 years. IUCN: Least Concern.
