Species Overview

A large oceanic dolphin (family Delphinidae) found in warm temperate and tropical waters worldwide. Adults reach 3.6–6.5 m in length and 1,000–3,000 kg; males are significantly larger than females. They have a bulbous, globe-shaped head (melon), no prominent beak, a broad-based dorsal fin set far forward, and long sickle-shaped pectoral fins. Color is dark gray to black with a lighter saddle patch behind the dorsal fin and a light anchor-shaped chest patch. They live in stable, matrilineal pods of 10–50 individuals, with strong social bonds. They are deep-diving predators, specializing on squid and fish, capable of diving to 600–1,000 m. They use echolocation for prey detection. Post-reproductive females exhibit menopause and continue to lead pods—one of few non-human mammals with this trait. They are among the cetacean species most commonly involved in mass strandings. Females have a ~15-month gestation, one calf, with long inter-birth intervals (5–8 years). Lifespan: 45 years (males), 60+ years (females). 2n=44. IUCN: Least Concern.
